My portrait work would seem at first glance, to be unlike my other work. These photographs, of course, involve people: animated, unpredictable human beings, — many of them children. A studio teeming with advertising professionals, make-up artists and stylists is a far cry from the silent setting of the desert or the contemplative atmosphere of a country road. It is a lively, fluid environment that relies on inter-personal chemistry.
But I have found that many of the techniques I use in the natural world are precisely what create calm and trust in a busy studio. Just as I do in my work outdoors, I maintain at a respectful distance, even ‘disappearing’ at times – allowing my subjects to interact naturally and unselfconsciously with each other or with their surroundings. I will also wait, without agenda or interference, for the moment that allows the subject’s essence to shine through.
And, like all of my work, I’m acutely aware that each of these moments is fleeting – and it is my privilege to capture them before they’re gone.
